What you will find on this page

Not one of these bats is frightening. They hang upside down from branches in threes, sit on crescent moons among the stars, sleep in a teacup covered in cobwebs, and one of them is in a lab coat holding a beaker. The wings are the reason this page is worth printing. They are drawn as open panels, not filled in black, so each one is a set of shapes to color rather than a silhouette that swallows a crayon.

Easy bat coloring pages for toddlers

The simplest sheets are the hanging bats: a rounded body, two wings folded like a cloak, a branch above. Four or five shapes in total, which is about right for a child who is still learning to stay inside a line. The bat with its three babies in a nest works the same way and has the advantage of being obviously sweet.

Bats for Halloween

Plenty of these belong to October: a bat perched on a carved pumpkin, one flying over a graveyard with a lantern, another in a witch's hat casting spells, a vampire bat asleep in an open coffin. What to do with them once they are colored

Bats are the easiest garland in the box. Cut around the wings, fold them slightly so they sit forward, and tape a row across the top of a window. The fold is what stops them looking flat.

A colored bat also makes a good place card: write a name along the lower wing and lean it against a glass. And if a child colors the Book of Spells bat, tape it to the cover of a notebook and the notebook becomes the spell book for the rest of the week.

Are these scary?

Why are the wings drawn like that?

Because a bat wing is a hand. The finger bones are drawn in rather than left as one solid triangle, which gives four or five long sections to color instead of a shape you fill with a single black stroke. It is also the part children ask about.

Are these only for Halloween?

They work all year. Bats hanging from a branch, bats crossing a moon, a bat holding a mango: only a handful have pumpkins in them, so the rest sit happily in a bat unit in March.
